# Best Suet Feeders (2026)

A suet feeder is a cage that holds a block of fat-based suet for woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees and other clinging birds. We compared four well-known models on access, capacity and cleaning, using manufacturer specs from Amazon listings and Project FeederWatch's feeder guidance.

Project FeederWatch says suet cages that are accessible only at the bottom tend to be starling-resistant but still let woodpeckers, nuthatches and chickadees feed by clinging upside down. Make sure the lid is secured so no animal can get stuck inside.

Our four picks include two upside-down designs and two double-cake cages. Offer suet in cooler weather, since it can turn rancid when it is warm.

## Four suet feeders compared

Specs come from each Amazon listing. Check the listing for current price, dimensions and warranty.

 Upside-down access

### Nature's Way Cedar Inverted Suet Feeder

A cedar cage with a protective hinged roof that holds one standard suet cake. The listing says the design encourages upside-down feeding by woodpeckers, chickadees, titmice and nuthatches and makes it harder for larger nuisance species to reach the suet.

 Starling-resistant design

### Birds Choice Upside Down Suet Feeder

A recycled-plastic feeder that the listing calls starling-proof. It holds one suet cake, lets birds feed from below and uses a vinyl-coated grid and stainless-steel screws for easy cleaning.

 Two cakes, weather guard

### More Birds Double Suet Cake Feeder

A steel double feeder with separate cages for two suet cakes and a shield that keeps cakes dry in rain and snow. The listing says it attracts woodpeckers, nuthatches and chickadees.

 Two cakes with extra perches

### Kingsyard All Metal Double Suet Feeder

An all-metal, powder-coated double feeder with a weatherproof roof, two extra perches and a removable roof. The listing says it holds two standard suet cakes.

## How do you choose a suet feeder?

Four decisions matter more than any single spec.

### Access and starlings

FeederWatch notes cages open only at the bottom tend to be starling-resistant while clinging birds feed upside down. A cage open on all sides invites starlings.

### One cake or two

Double feeders hold two standard suet cakes, which means fewer refills in winter but more suet exposed in warm weather.

### Roof and weather

A roof keeps suet drier. Offer suet in cooler weather, since it can turn rancid in the heat.

### Secure lid and cleaning

FeederWatch says to secure the lid so no animal gets stuck. Choose a cage you can open and rinse easily.

## Suet feeder questions

 Which birds eat suet?

Woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, titmice and wrens, according to the feeder guidance published by Project FeederWatch and Birds Canada.

How do I keep starlings off a suet feeder?

Use a cage that is accessible only at the bottom. FeederWatch says these tend to be starling-resistant while woodpeckers, nuthatches and chickadees can still cling upside down.

 When should I offer suet?

Best in cooler weather, so the suet does not become rancid, per the guidance from Birds Canada.
