Best Bird Feeders (2026)

The best all-round feeder depends on which birds you want and whether squirrels visit. We compared the feeders that Bob Vila, NBC Select and ShopSavvy recommend, checked them against Cornell Lab guidance on feeder types, and flag where the published specs are incomplete.

Quick answer

If squirrels are a problem, two Brome models are the only feeders recommended by more than one source: the Squirrel Solution200 (Bob Vila’s best overall and ShopSavvy’s overall pick) and the Squirrel Buster Standard (Bob Vila’s best squirrel-proof and ShopSavvy’s runner-up). Both reviews also call them expensive or limited in capacity. If squirrels are not a problem, NBC Select’s best overall is the Solution4Patio cedar hopper, and Bob Vila’s best bang for the buck is the Perky-Pet Copper Panorama.

For the widest range of birds, the Cornell Lab suggests starting with black-oil sunflower seed and offering more than one feeder type.

How we chose

Named in an expert review

A feeder is listed only if Bob Vila, NBC Select or ShopSavvy recommends it by name. We did not add products on our own opinion.

Agreement between sources

Products named by two sources are marked. Single-source picks are labelled.

Specs as published

Capacity, material and squirrel resistance come from those reviews. Anything not stated is shown as Not stated. NBC Select and ShopSavvy do not claim hands-on testing; Bob Vila does, and we report that as its claim.

Our picks

Brome Squirrel Solution200

Best overall · Bob Vila · also ShopSavvy’s overall pick

Per Bob Vila: a tube feeder with 3.4 lb capacity, four perches, an outer wire cage and a seed funnel; its cover closes the ports under a squirrel’s weight. Praised as durable and attractive with room for several birds. Downsides: larger birds have trouble perching, and it is expensive. ShopSavvy (which says it analysed other reviewers’ work) also ranks it first. Who it is for: yards with squirrels and small birds such as house finches and chickadees. Who should skip it: anyone who wants to feed larger birds, or has a tight budget.

Brome Squirrel Buster Standard

Best squirrel-proof · Bob Vila · also ShopSavvy’s runner-up

Per Bob Vila: a hopper with 1.3 lb capacity, metal and RoxResin construction that is chew-proof, waterproof and rustproof, a wire outer cage, and a weight-triggered closing mechanism; hang it with at least 18 inches of clearance. Downside: expensive. ShopSavvy’s summary of other reviews also notes limited capacity and possible clogging. Who it is for: squirrel-heavy yards with lightweight perching birds. Who should skip it: people who want to refill rarely.

Perky-Pet Copper Panorama

Best bang for the buck · Bob Vila (single source)

Per Bob Vila: a hopper with a 2 lb capacity, a copper-colored metal roof, a clear plastic cylinder and a 360-degree perch. Praised for keeping seed dry and for visibility. Downside: not squirrel-proof; Bob Vila advises hanging it from a pole with a baffle. Who it is for: several birds at once, including ground feeders such as cardinals. Who should skip it: yards with squirrels and no baffle.

Gray Bunny 6-Port Tube Feeder

Best tube feeder · Bob Vila (single source)

Per Bob Vila: metal lid, base and perches that resist chewing, a thick clear polycarbonate tube, about 4 cups (roughly 1.5 to 2 lb). Downsides: not squirrel-proof and not suited to larger birds. Who it is for: finches, chickadees and nuthatches. Who should skip it: anyone with squirrels or large birds.

Solution4Patio Cedar Bird Feeder

Best overall · NBC Select (single source)

Per NBC Select: a wooden hopper with a see-through seed reservoir, a cedar roof and a built-in suet feeder on the sides, with a 5.18 lb capacity. NBC quotes Tod Winston of New York City Audubon, who advises a sturdy wood hopper with room for many visitors. Squirrel resistance is Not stated. Who it is for: a classic hopper for many visitors. Who should skip it: squirrel-heavy yards, unless you add a baffle.

Kingsyard Platform Bird Feeder

Best budget · NBC Select (single source)

Per NBC Select: a plastic platform feeder holding 2.5 lb, with a dome that keeps seed dry and can be raised for bigger birds or lowered for smaller ones; the dome spins, so squirrels struggle to find footing. NBC quotes Emma Greig of Project FeederWatch (Cornell Lab), who likes platform feeders for finches, doves and sparrows. Who it is for: a low-cost way to attract a variety of birds. Who should skip it: anyone worried about droppings and starlings, which Cornell lists as platform downsides.

Which feeder fits you

You have squirrels

Choose a squirrel-proof design such as the two Brome models, or hang a non-proof feeder from a pole with a baffle. See Best Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeders and Best Bird Feeder Poles.

You want the most variety

The Cornell Lab says tray or platform feeders attract the widest range of seed-eaters, and hoppers attract finches, jays, cardinals and chickadees.

You want small birds only

Tube feeders suit finches and chickadees. See Best Tube Bird Feeders.

You want woodpeckers or nuthatches

Add a suet feeder; see Best Suet Feeders.

Limits of this guide

The ShopSavvy page is dated February 2025 and some of its headings name different products than its body text, so we used it only to confirm two Brome picks. Bob Vila’s testing claim is its own and we could not verify it. We have not tested any feeder.

Placement and care

NBC Select quotes Tod Winston: keep feeders at least 7 feet from overhanging branches and other jumping-off points, at least 5 feet off the ground to protect from cats, and use a swiveling baffle above. Clean feeders every two weeks with a solution of nine parts water to one part bleach, and keep seed dry to prevent mold. Cornell also says tube feeders can spread disease on shared perches, so clean them regularly. See How to Clean a Bird Feeder and Where to Put a Bird Feeder.

The Cornell Lab says tray or platform feeders attract the best variety of seed-eating birds, while hoppers attract finches, jays, cardinals, grosbeaks, chickadees and titmice.

What seed should I start with?

The Cornell Lab suggests black-oil sunflower seed, the most widely used seed, which attracts the largest range of species.
