Quick Answer: The Three Fixes That Matter Most
If you do only three things, do these.
Squirrels are strong jumpers. Keep feeders about 5 ft off the ground, ideally 10 ft or more from any tree or building, and clear of overhanging branches above.
On a pole, a smooth slide-on baffle blocks climbers. It only works if the pole is clear of jump-off points. See Best Squirrel Baffles for Bird Feeder Poles, and if rodents are climbing the pole too, How to Keep Rats Away from Bird Feeders.
A spring-loaded shroud closes the ports under a squirrel’s weight while lighter birds keep feeding.
Essential Blueprint
You will often see the “5-7-9 rule.” Cornell Lab’s Project FeederWatch is more cautious: squirrels can jump to feeders placed less than ten feet from a tree or building. Treat the numbers as a starting point and add distance if squirrels still reach the feeder.
5 ft
Height from the ground to the lowest feeding port, so a squirrel cannot leap straight up to it.
10 ft
Distance from trees, fences, decks, sheds and walls. FeederWatch says less than ten feet from a tree or building is within a squirrel’s jump. If you can touch a launch point from the pole, move the pole.
9 ft
Space beneath overhanging branches or roof edges so a squirrel cannot drop onto the feeder.
The Methods
Method 1 · Mechanical Baffle · Difficulty: Easy
A smooth steel cylinder gives climbing squirrels nothing to grip. The Audubon Torpedo slides onto a pole from 1/2 in to 1-3/8 in across using an included coupler and is 6.125 in wide.
Install: mount the baffle so its lower edge sits roughly 4 to 5 ft above the ground, with the feeder above it and nothing within leaping distance of the pole. Who it is for: round poles where you can slide the baffle on. Who should skip it: shepherd's hooks and poles with arms; Today's Homeowner, cited in our squirrel baffle guide, says torpedo baffles suit only straight poles. Prefer a pole that already includes a baffle? See Best Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder Poles.

No hardware can beat a squirrel that jumps from a branch or railing straight onto the feeder. Re-siting the pole into open yard costs nothing and removes most aerial routes.
Walk a 7 to 10 ft radius around the pole. If you can touch a fence, downspout, deck or shrub from there, move it farther out.
Method 3 · Weight-Activated Feeder · Difficulty: Easy
These use an internal spring: openings in a shroud line up with the ports until a squirrel’s weight pushes the shroud down and closes them. Brome’s Squirrel Buster Plus lets you adjust the spring to control how much weight the shroud carries. Who it is for: yards where squirrels keep emptying a standard feeder. Who should skip it: anyone who wants a feeder with no moving parts. See Best Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeders for models.

Safflower is a favourite of cardinals and other songbirds, and the Wagner’s listing notes that most squirrels generally dislike it. It will not replace a good feeder, but it can cut how often squirrels visit.

Nyjer is a tiny oil seed finches love. It is served through fine slits or mesh socks, which makes it awkward and unrewarding for squirrels.
Method 6 · Hot-Pepper Seed · Difficulty: Easy
Mammals feel capsaicin’s burn; birds do not. Project FeederWatch notes capsaicin-treated seed may deter squirrels, but says it knows of no research on high doses in birds and discourages adding any product to bird food that has not been thoroughly tested. If you try it, choose a reputable commercial blend such as Cole’s Blazing Hot Blend and treat it as an extra, not a fix.

Squirrels will drop onto a feeder from branches above it. Pruning limbs that hang within about 9 ft above the feeder removes that route. Check local rules and avoid cutting during nesting season.
Method 8 · Behavioural Redirection · Difficulty: Easy
Squirrels take the easiest food. Setting up a separate squirrel feeder with cheap corn or peanuts well away from your bird feeders can draw them off. Do this only after the main feeders are protected.
Folklore is everywhere. These are the ones to avoid.
Grease or petroleum products can transfer to feathers and damage their insulation and waterproofing. Never use them near feeders.
Animals tend to get used to repeated sounds, and there is little reliable evidence they stop squirrels at feeders.
Stationary decoys lose their effect quickly once squirrels learn they are harmless.
Dust can blow into birds’ eyes and irritate them. If you use capsaicin, choose seed that is treated and bonded to the seed rather than loose powder.
Can squirrels jump onto hanging feeders from above?
Yes. Squirrels can drop from branches onto a feeder below. Keep roughly 9 ft of clear space under overhanging limbs, or hang the feeder from a pole instead of a branch.
Is hot-pepper seed safe for birds?
Birds do not sense capsaicin the way mammals do, and treated seed may deter squirrels. But FeederWatch says it is unaware of research on high doses in birds and discourages adding any product to bird food that has not been thoroughly tested. Choose a reputable commercial blend, avoid loose powder, and keep it away from pets and children.
What is the single most effective fix?
Placement. Hardware only works once squirrels cannot leap to the feeder. After that, a pole baffle and a weight-activated feeder give two layers of protection.
